Preventing Snowflake-Sized Problems from Becoming Icebergs

For children, we believe that the best way to create positive, healthy relationships with going to the dentist is to take a conservative, non-invasive approach to care. Dr. Peng utilizes the Hall Technique to prevent further damage to a decayed tooth and silver diamine fluoride to help stop the progression of minor decay. These less invasive approaches result in more comfortable visits as well as preserve your child’s smile until their baby teeth naturally fall out.

With your little penguin’s best interests at heart, our team is happy to explain in greater detail why this conservative approach means so much to us. For more information, we invite you to give us a call.

The Hall Technique is a minimally invasive restorative option for primary teeth with decay and/or hypomineralization without any numbing, drilling, or sedation. It has been growing rapidly in popularity over the last several decades. It was originally introduced in the 1990’s by Dr. Norna Hall, a dentist out of Scotland, who sealed her pediatric patient’s cavities using a stainless steel crown with glass ionomer cement. The cavities became inactive once they were starved of the carbohydrates needed for them to get worse. Sealing the cavity with a crown allows the tooth to eventually heal itself. The Hall Technique is much less invasive and helps preserve natural tooth structure in addition to providing extra strength and protection.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Silver diamine fluoride is an antimicrobial liquid that can help stop the progression of decay. Instead of opting for a more invasive tooth-colored cavity filling, Dr. Peng assesses the severity of decay to determine if silver diamine fluoride is a more appropriate recommendation. It’s especially excellent for young patients who aren’t able to tolerate a lengthier dental treatment, and it’s 100 percent pain-free.

The process is simple and only takes a few minutes. First, Dr. Peng will dip a small brush into the silver diamine fluoride liquid. She’ll then apply the SDF directly to the cavity showing signs of decay. In addition to stopping the spread of cavities, SDF aids in enamel remineralization, or the strengthening of the outermost protective layer of teeth, to prevent further damage.
