Why Did You Decide to Become a Pediatric Dentist?

When Dr. Peng was in dental school, she volunteered at a summer bible camp where she met 8-year-old Joseph*. Because he was easily distracted by the other kids and fidgety, he often sat in the back during classes with the counselors. While other kids rapidly flipped their books and copied PowerPoint slides, Joseph took notes slowly, often wailing out loud at the pastor for moving on and rewriting letters because he was frustrated by the way they looked.

After observing Joseph, Dr. Peng sat next to him, took out a sheet of paper, and started writing simplified versions of each slide for him to copy. Every time he finished a page of notes, they made an origami star together – Joseph made 16 stars in one week! Joseph helped reveal Dr. Peng’s capacity for patience and acceptance, specifically for those with special needs. From then on, she knew she wanted to be a pediatric dentist and began her journey from there.

Dr. Peng is proud to be the daughter of first-generation immigrants who came to America for better opportunities. She is the first dentist in her family, and she also has a younger brother currently in dental school! She met her husband, Dr. Louie, while they attended UCLA together despite growing up just 10 minutes away from each other. A professed night owl, Dr. Peng likes to spend her free time teaching the youth at her church. She also enjoys learning new things that involve working with her hands, so you’ll often find her crocheting or even making balloon animals!
