Dr. Julia Peng is a compassionate dentist who has carefully thought through every detail of the care she offers your child, from the calming and welcoming colors of the dental office down to the materials she uses. Many dentists opt for amalgam fillings for children, which is a combination of metals. Not only can these be highly noticeable and dampen your little one’s desire to talk to their peers, but they also contain toxic ingredients like mercury and BPA. Dr. Peng opts for a safer, just as effective alternative, known as a tooth-colored filling. Read below to learn more about this treatment and call our office for more information about our safe and proven materials!

Many parents are leery of silver (amalgam) fillings, as they’ve been a topic of concern due to studies that have shown trace amounts of mercury from these dental restorations. While the American Dental Association maintains that the amount is small enough to be considered safe, Dr. Peng wants you to rest assured that the only materials our practice uses are 100 percent reliable and that your little one is out of harm’s way.

In addition to mercury, another harmful material found in some tooth-colored composite fillings is BPA, or bisphenol A, which has been connected to endocrine issues. The composite materials that we use at Little Penguin Pediatric Dentistry are also completely free of BPA, so you can rest easy knowing that only the safest materials will be in your child’s mouth.

Instead of metal amalgam or resin with BPA, we opt for a tooth-colored, biocompatible material that will blend in with your child’s smile in addition to offering it extra protection from future threats of decay. Some of the advantages of utilizing this material include:

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

Dr. Peng and our fantastic team will take excellent care of your child, ensuring they remain comfortable, in good spirits, and informed throughout their entire treatment. We’ll begin by preparing the tooth by clearing away any decayed dental structure and brushing a small amount of adhesive onto the tooth. Dr. Peng will then match the color of your child’s enamel to the shade of the composite resin, allowing it to perfectly blend in with the rest of the tooth. After shaping the resin and placing it onto your child’s tooth, our team will cure it using UV light.

Once the resin is fused with the tooth, Dr. Peng will make finishing touches to enhance the result, which can include texturizing the resin to look like natural enamel and checking to ensure that the bite is aligned. With proper dental hygiene, your child’s BPA- and mercury-free filling in Prosper can last for up to several years!
