title-deco - Little Penguin Pediatric Dentistry | Prosper, TX

Our team highly recommends that our patients follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s guidelines of bringing children in for their first dental visits as infants, by the time their first tooth erupts. Then, every six months after. These routine visits allow Dr. Peng and her team to prevent and stop common oral health issues among children, including premature tooth loss and cavities. We offer multiple kid-friendly preventive dentistry services in Prosper to help ward off the threat of tooth decay, break thumb-sucking and pacifier-sucking habits, and keep your precious, favorite smile shining for years to come. Call our office today to schedule a visit!

Quality Care For Patients With Special Needs

Dental Check-Ups

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children have a dental exam at least every 6 months. During your child’s dental exam, Dr. Peng will thoroughly examine your little one’s teeth and gums for signs of dental decay, gum disease, and any other oral health problems. By identifying any issues early on, we can prevent them from worsening so your child has a smile that lasts a lifetime!

Dental Cleanings

Even if your child brushes and flosses twice daily, it can be challenging for them to thoroughly clean all the surfaces of their teeth because some are simply harder to reach. A professional cleaning with our team generally consists of removing plaque and tarter from their teeth using specialized instruments, polishing their teeth to clear away any surface stains that may have built up, and flossing their teeth to remove harmful bacteria. Regular cleanings can keep your child’s smile bright and healthy!

Oral Cancer Screening

Although it’s not common for children to develop oral cancer, we ensure that no stone is left unturned during your child’s routine checkups by also conducting an oral cancer screening. This process is fast and easy for the kids. Dr. Peng will simply examine their throat, tongue, lips, neck, and any other areas of their oral anatomy that may display signs of the condition. If we spot anything, we’ll immediately inform you of the next recommended step to take.

Digital Radiography (X-Rays)

By implementing modern technology into our practice, like our portable digital X-ray imaging system, we’re able to minimize your child’s exposure to radiation and help you trust that they’re completely safe in our care. Digital X-rays offer a higher-quality image that allows us to make precise diagnoses, take less time to capture and display, and produce up to 80 percent less radiation than their traditional film counterparts. We also prescribe X-rays based on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines and the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) principle meaning we do not ever recommend unnecessary X-rays.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally derived mineral produced by rocks and found in other sources, like the air, soil, and fresh fruits and vegetables. However, most people are familiar with fluoride because they know it’s added to local water sources. This is because it has enamel-strengthening properties that help protect teeth from the threat of decay. If your child is in need of extra protection from cavities, we may recommend a fluoride treatment at the end of their cleaning. Or, if we spot the early signs of a cavity, we can treat and protect the affected tooth with silver diamine fluoride, which is an FDA-approved treatment.

For parents who value biologic-dentistry or would rather not use fluoride, we’re also happy to recommend and use products that don’t contain fluoride.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are similar to a penguin’s waterproof feathers that help keep them dry, except they’re for teeth! They’re clear shields that we brush over the top of your little one’s molars and harden using UV light. Once secured in place, this protective layer prevents food debris and bacteria from seeping into the pits and grooves. They’ll also make it easier to effectively brush teeth and drastically reduce their risk of cavities

Nutritional Counseling

The pressure of being a parent can feel immense, and we want you to know that our team has your back. In cases where you feel it could be beneficial, we can offer nutrition counseling. This process involves Dr. Peng looking at your child’s diet to consider whether it may be contributing to an increased risk of oral health problems.

Non-Nutritive Habits

Pacifiers and thumb-sucking are completely healthy habits that children develop to help them feel safe and calm. However, past a certain age, typically around three years old, non-nutritive habits can alter and harm their oral development. If your child is having difficulty stopping thumb-sucking or pacifier usage, Dr. Peng can provide you with helpful tips and tricks. That way, their smile will continue developing as it should.
